Interactive Entertainment. Or, simply – Video Games. Its BIIIG business, but it does have its moments. Despite all of Video Gamings’ economic ups and downs, however, one thing has remained constant: World of Warcraft [WoW] has reigned supreme in the MMORPG Interactive Entertainment World.
No other game in sales history has boasted the type of success that Activision Blizzard is so fortunate to possess. Just how big are they? Well, first you have Sales. Next, we have WoW-addiction. And there is the fan-based convention so affectionately known as – Blizzcon. And the reasons don’t stop there. Especially now, since Patch 3.2 has just released for World of Warcraft, providing even more content and fun for WoWFandemonium. I guess my point is – will any other MMORPG be able to “Dethrone the [Lich] King?“
Exploring this possibility intrigued me, especially in 2009. This year in gaming, a LOT of good news came out. First, we had E3. Cloud Gaming via the new OnLive console. And most recently, the new Apple iPhone 3G S announcement at WWDC. Things in gaming are looking on the up and up. From the casual gamer to the hardcore interactive entertainment artiste, everyone is grabbing the controller to get a chance to play.
What does that mean? Great gaming for us. Tough competition for others. Yes folks, this does include WoW. New and upcoming MMO’s are surfacing and they are catering to all different gamer tastes. We’ve got the newly released Sims 3. Halo 3. Even DC Online. All vying for a piece o’ that MMO pie.
So why, oh why(!), are people coming back time and time again (like me for example =] ) to play WoW? And paying a monthly fee to boot? Anyone in their right mind would use that money to purchase a console instead, PLUS it would allow you to purchase more than one game. But NO! We.Keep.Coming.Back. Why? I don’t know about you, but for me: its fun, and its because I’m loyal. And there are over 11.5 million subscribers that would agree with me. Seems like that recipe alone may make it difficult for any other MMO game to contend. If thats the case, its good to be the [Lich] King…
