Earlier today I mentioned the Sugoi Azifug time my friend @MarkSFO and I had at J-Pop Summit 2009. The Food: Oishikatta (OHSOGOOD). The Entertainment: Sugokatta! (Awesome!). But one aspect of the Festival that totally caught me, and others I’m sure, by surprise was the appearance of the tottemo kirei (beautiful) Japanese actress, Takako Tokiwa. And just when I thought that was good enough – my first Red Carpet, Movie Premiere experience! The release and debut of 20th Century Boys right here in Japantown San Francisco, CA.

I couldn’t believe the timing! How fortunate was I? Was I really going to meet “Friend”? Was I REALLY going to see Takako Tokiwa? On my recent Summer trip to Japan, I actually got the chance to watch 20th Century Boys 1 + 2 on the plane. Wanting to brush up on my Japanese skills before actually landing in Japan, I watched EVERY single Japanese movie they had in-flight. My goal was to watch the movies w/out subtitles to see if I had retained any of the Japanese I had learned in College. Looking through the library of movies they provide to you, (there is only so much you can watch on a 10 hour flight to Japan), the description for the movie of 20th Century Boys intrigued me. So I began to watch.

And became HOOKED! I had never picked up the manga prior to watching the movies, but always found Japanese movies intriguing. 20th Century Boys was mos def that. At the time, I didn’t think anything of it and thought that it was just another movie to watch while on the plane. Right? Little did I know that I was watching a film that would make its Movie Premiere, as well as getting a little screen time (I think they were doing some filming, so I got to be an extra – SCORE!), right here in San Francisco! AND I was able to capture it all!
