We are a website dedicated to Bay Area Lifestyle & Culture: profiling local artists, musicians, entrepreneurs, and businesses; revealing the latest technologies; guiding you through all the popular places to eat, shop, and play; TrendSpotting the latest in street style and fashion; and beyond. We strive to become your premiere source for all the latest news and information on Tech, Style, Music, and Entertainment in the Bay Area.
Our History
The word EDOPENO originated from the combining of the Founder’s full name: Edward (known to most as Edo) and Penano. The first part of the name: “EDO” is a Japanese word meaning “Bay.” This also refers to a time in Japanese history known as the Edo period (江戸時代) – a period in which the Japanese wholly embraced and enjoyed popular arts & culture. The second part of the name, “PENO,” is the shortened name of PENANO – and it serves as an anchor and a reminder to never to forget your roots. The embodiment of these two ideas: the enjoyment of modern lifestyle & culture in the “Bay”, while embracing traditional values of the past – is the time/space in which EDOPENO resonates.
Our logo also serves as a symbol for all of these elements combined: (1) the handwritten symbol within the circle is the Japanese script for “EDO” (referring to the Japanese character meaning “Old Tokyo,” which is now Osaka) and is used to represent the infinite aesthetic of the “Bay,” (2) “EDO” in a modern script used to illustrate the contemporary lifestyle in which we now live, (3) “PENO” in a more traditional script to illustrate our history, culture, and beliefs; and (4) a pipe “|” between the two, to show that both can (and should) live in one harmonious state.
In May of 2007, EDOPENO.COM opened up its “virtual” doors for the first time. Our focus was, and will continue to be, to open your eyes to the Lifestyle and many (sub)cultures found out here in the many areas that make up the Bay Area: San Francisco, San Jose, Silicon Valley, East Bay, Napa Valley, and beyond.
