In Japan, there is the 桜祭 (さくらまつり) or sakuramatsuri. In the US, we call it the Cherry Blossom Festival. What do the two have in common? You know what this is? It’s a celebration !@#^%^! The Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival is making its way for us all to enJoi!

When?
Festival: Saturday and Sunday, April 10 & 11, 17 & 18, 2010
Grand Parade: Sunday, April 18, 2010
Queen Pageant: Saturday, April 10, 2010

Where?
Festival: Japantown (@ Post & Buchanan Streets), San Francisco
Grand Parade: Begins at San Francisco City Hall and ends at Post & Fillmore
Queen Pageant: AMC Kabuki 8 Theater, Japantown

And what’s more? Artist Village is coming to town!

Full details:

Spring is in full blossom! Come out to play!

April 10 and 11 (Sat / Sun) 11am – 6pm
April 17 and 18 (Sat / Sun) 11am – 6pm
at NEW PEOPLE

We love Bazaar Bizarre SF!
Both weekends of Cherry Blossom Festival, we will host another NEW PEOPLE ARTIST VILLAGE (Vol.3), a fun and festive vertical arts and crafts show that climbs up our building. Make sure to check out all the locally handmade goodness that the artists themselves display!

NEW PEOPLE first teamed up with Bazaar Bizarre SF in November of 2009 for our first NEW PEOPLE ARTIST VILLAGE. It was a great concept to connect our TOKYO CREATORS MARKET exhibition opening on the 3rd floor with a vertical “art village” that lead up to it. We have since enjoyed teaming up with this creative group, and our visitors get to find something new on every corner of our building!

On a previous post, I mentioned my adoration for Takako Tokiwa and the movie series. Redemption is the final movie in the Trilogy, and well, I didn’t want to miss it…

Before we get to my thoughts on the last of the Trilogy – 20th Century Boys :: Redemption, however, check out the fotos I took on my iPhone after the jump. They tell the story of my recent visit to New People. Sug(enj)oi!

But one aspect of the Festival that totally caught me, and others I’m sure, by surprise was the appearance of the tottemo kirei (beautiful) Japanese actress, Takako Tokiwa. And just when I thought that was good enough – my first Red Carpet, Movie Premiere experience! The release and debut of 20th Century Boys right here in Japantown San Francisco, CA.

I couldn’t believe the timing! How fortunate was I? Was I really going to meet “Friend”? Was I REALLY going to see Takako Tokiwa? On my recent Summer trip to Japan, I actually got the chance to watch 20th Century Boys 1 + 2 on the plane. Wanting to brush up on my Japanese skills before actually landing in Japan, I watched EVERY single Japanese movie they had in-flight. My goal was to watch the movies w/out subtitles to see if I had retained any of the Japanese I had learned in College. Looking through the library of movies they provide to you, (there is only so much you can watch on a 10 hour flight to Japan), the description for the movie of 20th Century Boys intrigued me. So I began to watch.
:
:
:
And became HOOKED! I had never picked up the manga prior to watching the movies, but always found Japanese movies intriguing. 20th Century Boys was mos def that. At the time, I didn’t think anything of it and thought that it was just another movie to watch while on the plane. Right? Little did I know that I was watching a film that would make its Movie Premiere, as well as getting a little screen time (I think they were doing some filming, so I got to be an extra – SCORE!), right here in San Francisco! AND I was able to capture it all! Check out fotos from the Movie Premiere, the beautiful Takako Tokiwa and find out more information about 20th Century Boys complete w/ a movie trailer, after the jump.

The anticipation of the third and FINAL movie is killin’ me and I can’t wait to watch it! So for anyone that lives in the Bay Area and wants to catch the third and FINAL movie with me (date: Fri, 8/28 – Thu, 9/3), leave a comment and lets meet-up! See you at the eigakan!

Also, I’ve got SoOoOoO many pictures! Will update w/ more soon!

Just this past weekend, my friend @MarkSFO and I (TRU3 B37A) made our way to J-Pop Summit in Japantown, San Francisco. The Nouveau-Japantown celebration unveiled, quite possibly, the first Japanese Popular Culture (J-Pop) Shopping Centre ever to reach the US. The four-storied shopping complex (a basement counts, ya?), cleverly called – New People – provides exclusive access of the J-Pop Culture to a wider audience, without having to travel all the way to Japan to get it.

The injection of NEW-LYF into an old Japantown (J-Town) is a good thing, and I could foresee a resurgence of youth populating its every crevice. I still remember the days when the only time I would head out to J-Town would be after a night of clubbing, ordering my loco moco at Denny’s. And occassionally stopping by the bowling alley to knock down a few pins, or the Kabuki Theatre for some eiga. However, removing all the fun activities that brought the youth in (although, violence was an issue as well), resulted in the youth not wanting to return. But lets forget about the past and look at what we got NOW! And what is that? One haute azifug shopping centre! New People is tne New Life in Japantown and we’ve got the fotos to prove it! Check out all of the Sugoi Azifug fotos, after the jump.
